Roasted fig as a coffee alternative has been around for at least 150 years. In 1873, there were 20 factories in Germany that manufactured roasted fig. Vienna had a worldwide reputation for its coffee in part because fig was added. While roasted fig by itself makes a delicious caffeine-free beverage, mixing it with coffee gives your favorite coffee additional body and depth of flavor. Great espresso shots are much easier to produce consistently by taking away the sensitivity to the grind and tamping process. Another benefit is the reduced acid since figs are alkaline.
